The interlock program is designed to allow you to drive after having your licence disqualified for a drink driving offence. After serving your disqualification period, to get your licence back you will need to have an alcohol interlock device installed in your vehicle. Before installing an alcohol interlock device, ensure that you are eligible to be relicensed and don’t have any driving bans in place or due to start.
During installation you will be issued with an alcohol installation certificate as evidence that you have had an alcohol interlock installed in your vehicle. This certificate is a requirement of relicensing. When you have fulfilled all requirements, you will need to apply for a licence with an “I” condition. You then become a participant of the Victorian Alcohol Interlocks Program and will be required to have an approved alcohol interlock installed in any vehicle you drive on Australian roads.
What is an Alcohol Interlock?
An alcohol interlock device is designed to prevent a vehicle’s engine from starting if alcohol is present on the driver’s breath. The alcohol interlock will measure and record the level of alcohol every time the driver takes a test. This information is then downloaded on a monthly basis and forwarded to the monitoring authorities.
